Elon Musk's SpaceX plans to invest tens of billions of dollars to build a semiconductor plant in the US state of Texas. The plant is apparently intended to make chips for autonomous driving technology and humanoid robots.
A notice from Grimes County in Texas says the estimated capital investment for the initial phases is 55 billion dollars. It says the estimated total will be 119 billion dollars if additional phases are realized. The notice also says the plan would represent a transformative investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity.
In March, Musk announced plans for a large scale shipbuilding effort called Terafab. The project also involves Musk's electric carmaker Tesla and the AI development and social media firm xAI.
