Custom Design for Electronic Component (Metal Dome)

Metal Dome, also known as metal tactile dome, is a tactile switching component. It provides crisp click feeling and controls circuit on/off when pressed. Supplied in custom carrier tape & reel format, it supports automatic SMT pick-and-place assembly for mass PCB production. Custom carrier tape is specially designed to hold and protect the domes, preventing flipping, deformation and ESD damage during shipping and SMT feeding.

Problem:

One of our clients in Europe has requested a custom design for Metal Dome. They want the parts to stay in the pocket without any removal so the components can be well protected in the pockets.

Solution:

Our engineering team promptly designed a custom carrier tape to meet this request, Below, you will find the drawing of the custom carrier tape. Built from black polystyrene (PS) and compliant with the EIA-481-D standard and RoHS regulations, this carrier tape features a 16.00mm width and 0.30mm thickness. Its precision-machined cavities (4.25mm × 8.20mm × 3.00mm) provide a secure fit for the component, while a sprocket hole system (8.00mm pitch, 1.50mm diameter) ensures seamless compatibility with automated SMT assembly lines. With tight dimensional tolerances (±0.10mm on critical features) and a maximum cumulative pitch error of ±0.2mm over 10 holes, the design maintains the high standards our clients rely on for their production efficiency.
