Industry News: Micron invests $1.8 billion to acquire Powerchip’s Gongluo plant, accelerating its HBM/DRAM capacity expansion

On March 16th local time, Micron Technology, a leading global memory manufacturer, announced the completion of its acquisition of the Gongluo P5 factory of Quanxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (PSMC) in Miaoli County, Taiwan. This transaction marks the formal entry into force of the acquisition agreement announced by both parties on January 17, 2026. The Gongluo factory boasts approximately 300,000 square feet of independent 300mm cleanrooms, which will help increase Micron's capacity for advanced DRAM products (including HBM) to meet the growing demand driven by artificial intelligence. Micron stated that the Gongluo factory will be an important complement to its Taiwan operations and will be vertically integrated with its large factory in Taichung (approximately 15 miles from Gongluo), significantly expanding capacity and generating synergies.

The Gongluo plant is expected to begin supporting large-scale product shipments in fiscal year 2028. In addition, Micron plans to advance the next phase of construction on the plant, with plans to start construction on a second plant by the end of fiscal year 2026, focusing on adding approximately 270,000 square feet of cleanroom space.

On January 17th of this year, Micron announced its plan to acquire PSMC's Gondola plant for $1.8 billion (excluding production-related machinery and equipment), thereby establishing a long-term advanced DRAM packaging partnership between the two companies.

TrendForce believes that this collaboration will benefit Micron by increasing its advanced process DRAM capacity and enhancing PSMC's supply of mature process DRAM, with global DRAM supply expected to increase by 2027.

According to TrendForce forecasts, starting in the second half of 2025, ASIC and AI inference will drive demand for HBM3e and DDR5 respectively, thereby improving overall DRAM profit margins and prompting Micron to accelerate capacity expansion. The acquired Gondola plant includes land, factory buildings, and cleanroom facilities. Micron is expected to gradually introduce existing and newly ordered equipment, primarily focusing on front-end equipment for advanced DRAM processes, with mass production anticipated to begin in 2027. It is estimated that the first phase of the Gondola plant will contribute more than 10% of Micron's global capacity by the fourth quarter of 2026.
