Recently, GlobalWafers Chairman Hsiu-lan Xu announced that the company has begun planning the second phase of its Texas factory project. A decision regarding whether to commence this phase and a specific timeline is expected in the second half of this year. In May 2022, GlobalWafers decided to establish its flagship manufacturing base in the United States, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held in Sherman, Texas, in December of the same year. The project represents a total investment of $3.5 billion.
In 2025, GlobalWafers America (GWA), a 12-inch silicon wafer fab located in Texas, will officially begin production. At the opening ceremony, Xu Xiulan stated that the company plans to invest an additional $4 billion, bringing its total investment in the United States to $7.5 billion!
12-inch silicon wafers are a critical material for wafer foundries and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) in producing advanced, mature, and memory chips. GlobalWafers plans to add a third and fourth phase expansion project to Sherman’s existing plans.
The plant is reportedly located on a new 142-acre site that can accommodate up to six phases of expansion. Under the strategic expansion plans for phases three and four, there is still room for two final phases of expansion, which would significantly increase capacity.
